What creates the meaning in poems?

I'm writing an essay on the poem "10 things I hate About You" and I have to explain how the meaning behind it is created. I know tone and poetic devices help but this poem doesn't have poetic devices so I need 2 other examples that help me explain how the meaning of this poem is created. 10 Things I Hate About You I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair.I hate the way you drive my car, I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick,it even makes me rhyme. I hate the way you’re always right, I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact that you didn’t call. But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you, not even close…not even a little bit… not even at all.

Actually I think it does have poetic devices like repetition, rhyme scheme, those things count. Also the words you choose is primarily what adds meaning to a poem.I googled this real quick : [external link] list of poetic devices. You can look up more.

It’s done with the repetition of the phrase, “I hate…” that goes halfway through in derogatory statements and then turns on “it even makes me rhyme” toward a positive ending. It shows how a poem can help someone to express love for someone else when the writer is so emotionally hurt that they can’t do it directly.
